Local Fauna

None of the snakes and spiders on the land in Fiji are poisonous to humans. There is a sea snake that is poisonous, but they are very shy and do not pose a threat. The stone fish, however camouflages itself in the sand in shallow water and its poison causes great pain and even sometimes death.

Endemic Animals

The only mammal endemic to Fiji is a megabat called the Fijian monkey-faced bat (Mirimiri acrodonta). Also called the Fijian flying fox or Fijian flying monkey.
